fashion one of the Fast and Furious parent Workshop this first session is really good over here and overview of the substance use I'm just the research surrounding the use we're just getting things I got to do that's more focus on how to talk to your it's about drugs and alcohol workshop and let's get started okay so my name is Anna Riley I'm the psychiatric social worker Revere this is my third year at Revere I do have no individual counseling class and presentation all things are both under my scope at Revere my office services in case your kids are ever looking for me and I also just started doing that practice so I have a small Private Practice on the side as well who is like to just checking on you don't have to put it in the chat if you don't want to but something to do with the kids is just to check in with yourself how are you feeling right now what energy you're coming into the workshop last how are you feeling tired and distracted I'm feeling ready to call ready to learn I was just going to check in to them kind of evaluate what you might need to do to get inside to make sure you're ready Sports Bar for the relationship between risk and protective factors on so that your child may need help where did just want to get a little disclaimer I do and that you're not watching this workshop with your kids the purpose is to give information to parents and caregivers you know if students are learning but of course. Discussion it wasn't we already know the research tells us that our youth have a wide access to substance is exposed to such as taking some other ones I'll be going over really concern me early drug abuse also increases the likelihood of addiction and the good news is significant influence in their Children's Division you're not with alcohol and other drugs and alcohol by the time students are seniors in high school one and five views prescription Jones 2/3 have tried alcohol is really high student report having used marijuana in 40% just to let everyone here knows any sort of drug or alcohol use by children and teens is considered substance abuse we might think of it as normal I will get it out later than normal but it really is considered substance abuse because kids using any sort of drugs or alcohol and interferes with a normal brain development so it's even in moderation it's not their brain development can have serious consequences if you're not seeing what's up some fuses not normal and it shouldn't be discussed as a normal shower kit what are some of the dangers in adverse effect we know that it affects development and affects the growth and development especially bringing development in children and teens it occurs more frequently with other risky behaviors so when our kids are under the influence they're more likely to be more likely to be engaging in Risky sexually engaging with risky and chips other risky behaviors also increase as they're using substances I'm also affects relationships you must work here in familial relationships which will get two more later and help mental health related issues unfortunately loss of life can be a result of substance you really serious which is why I'm hoping sister educating everyone now our kids are still young some of them might be engaging already and you might be here. knowledge that you might want to be interested in but whatever the reason it's good to learn about it right now so we can start hopefully preventing or intervening with our kids okay the talk for our alcohol marijuana medication prescription or one of the issues let me know intervention so alcohol and not going to read all of these but these are some other names that kids are using for alcohol there also you think so text  to talk whatever it is these are some things to be looking out for what you think the alcohol makes abhorrent I'm more fun and they might be hearing that you know like one more fun things to do or they might be hearing the alcohol obviously most of us no alcohol a our reasoning and long-term alcohol is liver and heart disease so I'm sure we all know someone who struggle with alcoholism and extremely serious and scary and and some of the signs of intoxication coordination of nausea vomiting you want to be with me over hangover know on certain weekend after your kids without they seem like they're not feeling so good those are things to be wake me up 4 call the most abused substance by teams and studies show that alcohol use also can lead to use of marijuana and other substances risk factor for alcohol use disorder is like alcoholism we also know that increases the risk of addiction no matter how old you are the Teenage brain is more susceptible to addiction kids are drinking earlier and drinking more heavily earlier that's a risk factor for addiction later on history of family alcohol also places children at greater risk for developing alcohol problems it's important to think about your family and you know it was you or your stalls are there other parent alcohol cuz that is something really to be aware of the answer talk to you I'm the social acceptance of drinking among people of legal drinking age can also leave any chance of you alcohol is relatively whatever adults in real life and so we want to make sure remodeling drinking one where are the age for kids where are you getting alcohol so I was kind of surprised by the statistic really by the friends but the fact that 31% of kids are getting alcohol at the moment but I do remember just my own childhood and hearing stories from kids the kids do take alcohol from their parents so I suggest if you have alcohol at home either keeping it somewhere where the kids don't know back in the day when we were young we would like Mark the bottles of where we're taking alcohol from them where the line on the kids get creative with water in the home and outside the problem with social acceptance I just mention it I do lessons were allowed to drink at home drinking more heavily outside and I'll probably live in home repair District rules against drinking at a young age and also drink responsibly themselves so I feel like this is one of the most important slides that I have I remember from my own childhood and from talking to kids do you know some parents allow them to drink in the house because it's a more study for supervised environment however research shows that they sent the wrong message and tell them first kids against future problems so the message that we are encouraging you to share with your kids is that your family does not allow underage drinking and that those who are all of the drinking age in the home drink responsibly so this is the message that LAUSD is suggesting parents give to their kids I wanted to leave a little bit of room for my personal opinion so while I think this message is good that you don't approve of it you don't like I think it's always good to leave room for kids making mistakes I don't want the door to be completely shocked between here and your child let's say they do do you need a ride or if they did something you want them to still feel safe coming to you while they understand that you don't allow so there's different ways that you can frame this preference in your own parenting style but my way would be you know I don't know because it's dangerous and kind of laying out the reasons why you don't like drinking however if you make a mistake or if you ever need a ride of course I'm going to be there no questions asked I will be there to support you and help you through it just having those types of conversations understand your expectation and knowing that you still love them you're still going to be there for them if they do make a mistake and that my own personal little addition to the LAUSD messaging put also extremely important for caregivers model responsible alcohol consumption themselves so of course there's alcoholism with parents not liking or when they're drinking so something you can do is just make sure you're never drinking and driving and always emphasizing that to your kid avoid drinking as a way to cope with stress you really want to model for kids healthy ways of coping with not using alcohol will it help my anxiety or a kid so some of the dangers of marijuana are causing memory and learning problems especially increasing anxiety and panic attacks it can even increase risk later in life especially if they're using and it's just not good for the developing brain so you know that's what I try to frame it as for kids as yes I understand it's legal now for adults even then you know it may not results but until you're an adult now I understand your brain is still developing until you're 25 and it really impact your brain development so it's really not good for your brain signs of intoxication for marijuana First Blood thinking of a dry mouth and increased I personally have noticed I think might be under the influence of marijuana the slow talking to question it takes them awhile to respond so that's something you really want to be conscious of and if you're noticing any of those your kids just a little bit more about marijuana is the product of plant and regular marijuana marijuana users start during adolescence so Middle School unfortunately is the time when it's on make sure that you're talking about synthetic marijuana also known as K2 is there a stronger than predictable it's unfortunately easily accessible online and it goes undetected on drug test so I do know that a lot of parents if I can asthma show me the marijuana or another substance they do start drug testing but unfortunately if it's synthetic marijuana it wouldn't be why are we concerned about marijuana in recent years had increased and these two more potential for addiction so TC is responsible for the high feeling whistle E2 more severe the more dependents on marijuana obviously increase risk of mental health issues including HR using marijuana are more likely to develop schizophrenia later on it also like I said has tremors effects on the developing brain is marijuana leads to difficulty thinking and problem-solving it leaves too long bones with memory and learning reduced coordination and difficulty maintaining attention so that's something I encourage everyone to talk to kids about is that you know even if they're just trying it out it's they're developing brain actually if they're using it more often and it scared me to death Tuesday concentration in leaf marijuana has increased nearly four times since 1995 Armstrong is it scary for kids that are there just getting that you know not from where it's regulated and they're getting it or somewhere else Street you can be really a concern either doesn't different ways marijuana is smoked or sometimes it just looks like a normal snack or not like I said they can get kind of sneaky about it so just go to be aware that there are these all these different types of edibles hello the next one that we are unfortunately seen blow up in the past yours is beeping you have heard that it's not harmful and you can't get hooked on it so the dangers are that nicotine is highly addictive and can be just like any drug and alcohol it can cause sleep problems and makes depression and anxiety worse it can lead to health issues like lung damage and chronic bronchitis so while kids may I hear that it's not extremely addictive. flavored E-cigarettes are also really getting kids addicted nowadays there's all these different kid friendly flavors cotton candy chocolate I'm so there's tons of toxic ingredients that are in a is chemically but like this is another example of different shapes and sizes and flash drives so it's often difficult for parents and teachers even recognize a fate which is another scary thing happening so if you are suspicious you what to look for in the backpacks are in the if you are the added risk of marijuana it can be more discreet because if it can be smoked less and does not carry a scent so easily in a way and it also marijuana tends to be more potent with higher concentrations of thz so we really really want to talk to her she has about why it's important to stay away from like I said today is just be a wearing it and then my session in February is going to be more attractive about stopping to talk to kids about these things the last one that I was going to talk about his prescription or over-the-counter OTC drugs so these are you know any drugs that are prescribed to you or prescribe to even care that it's basically a high the dangers are Mike long term use can cause a psychotic behavior seizures and of course we know that you can feed Alia overdose on pills so signs of abuse or intoxication would be slurred speech shallow breathing sluggishness disorientation 5 of coordination increased attention span all of your prescription drugs prescription and over-the-counter drugs can be just as dangerous addictive and even deadly abusing street drugs alcohol prescription drugs are the most commonly misused so why are these prescription drugs being abused by team home for a friend's house or maybe they have their own prescription or a friend so medication from a friend or relative so we want to be really careful about giving kids even typical I'm just getting ahead of myself misperceptions that abusing medicine is not dangerous that's another reason they are abusing it mistakenly seen as safer than street drugs by teens and even adults because you know it's seen as soon as it was created in a lab healing and maybe it's because it's certified by the FDA so these are just common misconceptions that helped cause he seems to think that abusing prescription drugs isn't Peter Stone commonly abused medications you know we've all heard of the opioid epidemic over the counter cold and cough medicine yeah there's a lot out there I know it's also a lot of information I'm probably just breathing through it cuz I've had a lot of time to process it but I recognize a lot it's really scary and cancer all of this and it will also be recorded and posted though the size and everything will be available on the website if I'm going quickly so much information to get through this is the one that obviously most concerned about recently for good reason overdose if one honestly terrifying so most people probably know but more potent than morphine used to treat severe pain rapid respiratory depression resulting an accidental death so really scary fentanyl that were seeing kids overdosed you want is referred to a street Fentanyl mixed with other highly addictive and dangerous drugs like heroin and cocaine and it's even sometimes made with bright colors to resemble candy and a fuel to use it or if I see me and everyone I'm sure and we just want everyone to be aware that even one small dose of Street which would be the equivalent of 527 grains of salt can be deadly easily accessible often sold on social media so that's why it's important to send a clear message your kids from an early age so kids can learn that you owe me to take medicine when you're sick and only if you're a parent or doctor gives it to you to take medicine by yourself or taking the wrong or taking medicine that isn't especially for you is dangerous family or friends medicine cabinet it doesn't mean that it's safe for you to take the medication even just wanted a Time take me to serious illness or death so I know this is scary for young kids to not that we want them to be scared on a daily basis we just really need them to understand that it's not okay to take any sort of pills or medication that is not theirs and they're not prescribed to and taking the right those that are pretty so I would still encourage you as a parent at this age if your child takes medication to be kind of the manager of that yours are high school you can start trusting them to take a note but you have to make sure they understand the risk of misusing medication the medication misuse includes taking someone else's medicine that's prescribed who directed and taking medicine to get high or mixing medicine with alcohol or other substances these are all things to talk to kids about that they absolutely should not be doing it's just an overdose overdose symptoms of an overdose for slow breathing clammy skin choking your nails and you should call 911 immediately if you're noticing anything like this if you think someone is over. You do have no I don't expect a lot of parents or beer as a stop and administering prisoner side to prevent until emergency has happened to anyone but it's just good to be aware of what to do if you ever see this really really terrifying that this has been happening a I want to go over a few common misconceptions so the first common misconception is that everything an experiment experiment other drugs or excuse parents and talked with those parents about their approach to supervision and their stands on substance used in middle school and my mom was Mom that like major the parents were going to be at the how do you make sure that we were being monitored and at the time I thought it was so embarrassing but now I realize that you want to make play Dua supervision especially if you're having concerns about their mental health or at the end the presentation I'll talk about signs to look for me on top of your child and making sure that they're also on top of things the second one is that it's just a phase eventually grow out of it is the dangerous child if you believe this cuz it might be true but they all the rest of them really worth it so if you concerned that they might be abusing substances it something to take seriously and talked about that at the end of will you can do the next one is that they're only using your eyes out for attention I haven't heard this one from kids as much as for substance use that I have kids just an active attention and you know can we maybe in me and so you want to make sure you take it seriously and have this open dialogue with them about it instead of brushing it off as they're just looking for attention so few reasons why children use substances the first reason is to fit in particularly in Middle School do they feel like an outsider are they long to be included in life with pure pressure all of these things are valid middle schooler might feel I remember feeling left out and wanting to fit into Middle School I'm sure most of us what can parents do is talk to kids about their need for acceptance and fitting in encouraging positive influences so it's only I talk about all the time you know what is this a good friend what makes a good explaining that the real threat there real friends will give them space to be themselves and won't make them do anything uncomfortable with her hanging out with them. that might be a real friend if you're trying to get them to do something that they know isn't safe reason number two you better so I do see this pressure a lot for students at more of your more than others do you have this picture Tyler perform really good athletically or I could definitely and I can leave them feeling a lot of stress about it and unfortunately or prescription stimulants because I think those up is brainstorming together with your child healthy ways to manage their stress in their life such as more sleep getting outdoors more on one time with the parent or family member just letting them questions and helping them think through these ideas are overwhelmed and problem-solve how can we hope you feel better help you with that stress because they feel unfortunately the more likely they will be to think of the potential for performance enhancer how to make sure we're having that open dialogue about healthy coping skills for stress and then this one is the big one for me and my roll another reason children use the senses is to feel better so managing emotional toll of problems dress trauma Seventeen the substances in an attempt to relieve these feelings of distress May contribute to the development of probation of substance abuse so if your child is diagnosed with a mental health issue is just something to be aware of that I can be used as a unhealthy coping tool or if you're trying to do something really stressful are they different in like maybe Under the Influence something to look out for your child suffering reassure them that you will seek out professional help and then it's important that you do that I've had a few students over the years you know tell me I know it's not necessary and I'm also here to assist with that is that something you need help with my ability toxic stress if they have undiagnosed mental no problem can we hit 3 favorable parental attitudes towards lack of supervision but I see all the happening at Revere association with a lack of school connectedness and low academic achievement so obvious things in your family history something to be aware of because it can increase the risk for substance abuse okay this is our adverse childhood experiences these experiences can include things like caregiver mental illness household violence traumatizing for kids or is that a kid has more likely they are to be so under a lot of trauma or intervene early and get them if they don't start using substances to kind of cope with the results of that drama or stress this is a related to talk 6th Sears in many cases without support of adults wear and tear on the body and brain so it kind of gives set a time without support of adults and without intervention so is going through a really stressful talk or hot for a lot of stress in the past so stressful and scary talk there is good news protective factors can outweigh the risk factors so the presence of protective factors can lessen the impact of those risk factors that I just outlined not use problem even if experience those risk factors and response of relationships between children and their caregivers can help us all it's one of my favorite the strongest protective factor is a strong parent caregiver relationship with the child even if it's not the parent of a child has one trusted adult in their life that they really feel comfortable and safe way is he crazy the risk factors for substance use mental health issues other protective factors are just reported in my relationship communication and parental involvement you know fortunately I hear far too often that kids don't really talk to their parents like at all you know some kids have told me their parents aren't really a lot of working a lot with a stand just for survival in the family but it's so important to try and build a relationship with your child where you're asking them about their friends into the more you talk to your chances that they have these protective factors that will smoke or use drugs when they feel that their parents are at we involved in their lives so you just think it's really positive and just me hope you know that I already know are you doing this but it's just a good reminder movie John Green is under construction and needs you as a parent the prefrontal cortex and I always tell them fully developed until age 25 so parents have to be a part of the brain for their child healthy choices frustrated that are teenagers so because they actually all their fault the brain doesn't fully developed so we need be there to intervene when they are making those mistakes and impulsive behaviors difficulty wedding making an emotional decision and sticking instant gratification like your teenager can be really frustrating to deal with some of these things but we all were there so it's just kind of how it is difficult evil to the management building that relationship with your child parents and caregivers are powerful as the caregiver you have a major impact on your child's decision not to you drugs and alcohol so like I said prevention starts when you start talking and listening to your child helping your child make good decisions and good for teaching your child to say no so I can get a lesson the Kids doc. I'm going to talk about this Workshop which is how to talk to your kids about alcohol but one way that I suggest is you know having kids tell their friends my parents drug test me or for after school so I can't do different ways I can still without using drugs or alcohol and then there's no guarantee if you provide guidance and Siri but not using drugs in conversation with your child and safe drinking is there all how you use your power will Define your relationship with your child so if you are kind of parenting out of this year and wanted to have power over your child stop communication disconnect you from your child example examples maybe you know if you find out your kids take their phone instead of Power with relationship is communication / 4 the child and the parent matter relationships in the future so the phone is chicken but it's not a screen conversation maybe a loving conversations like I'm worried about you because X Y and Z is why this is dangerous for you and I need you to be safe so let's have a conversation about why do you need help do you need me to help you find a therapist really using communication instead of just the sphere reaction of power over your child unfortunately you can't be your child's friend they need a parent really concerning instances in the past know where your parents are vaping with their children are taking Edibles with their middle schooler that's not what I can't mean you know structure we need to know the rules consequences for if they break the rules. Common signs of something out for change secretive aware of that unusual tired and lots of interesting activities losing friends at the table for a long time and you can't really figure out the reason all warning signs to look for physical appearance especially if they smell of smoke if you have dry eye bloodshot 2 minutes personal appearance that can be a big one diminished ability to focus decrease the disregard for the rules since they were born so you kind of know what's normal do anything that's like a difference in their Norm is it might be a mental health issue puberty but it's only a warning sign and something to think about if you are concerned about potential Subs could my child benefit from Individual or family therapy attention and Care from their parents and caregivers so they might be professional help if you've recently had a family stressor your child Mimi therapy are they showing warning signs or have you discovered Counseling Services support resilience by providing tools to code remaining children and I want to share things with addresses adult so like I said I can help with therapy resources if you think this is something he could benefit from but I do recommend you are aware child using substances or yours in the last line it's always a good idea to talk to you therapy talk to me at the school if you need support just so we can get to the bottom of it and try to play some of those protective factors to avoid something to you hopefully and that is all I know that was a lot of information I was trying to go fast to have a little bit of time kiss again question but here's my email. call region of the conversation but more specifically and thank you and I will
